It’s too late for me to talk about heat printing ideas for Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday), since it is upon us. But we have some that might help with any pending St. Patrick’s Day orders, once you’re done with your Mardi Gras celebrations. I realize there aren’t many cities in the U.S. that celebrate Mardi Gras in the style of New Orleans, which is going to be a raging party on March 4th, and for which I’m sure there are many, many t-shirts. And while I’ve been to New Orleans many time for trade shows and other events, I’ve never been there during Mardi Gras/Carnival season. However I have had the opportunity to see how Carnival is celebrated in Mainz, Germany, where it’s known as “Fastnacht”. Mainz is one of the three “Carnival” cities in Germany (along with Cologne and Duesseldorf), that hold huge pre-Lenten celebrations similar to those held in New Orleans. Suffice it to say there are costumes, fun-loving people, parades and lots of beer. But that was many, many years ago. Here at Stahls’, things aren’t that wild, but we have had the tradition of eating “paczki,” (pronounced punsch-key) or very delicious jelly donuts on Fat Tuesday. This is a Polish tradition throughout the Midwest on “Fat Tuesday” or “Shrove Tuesday” the day before Ash Wednesday. The eating of these deep fried treats as a Fat Tuesday tradition originally began when people wanted to use up ingredients in the house that were “forbidden” during the upcoming Lenten fasting season. Here in the Detroit-Hamtramck area, they take their paczkis seriously. So if you’re lucky enough to be offered a paczki this Tuesday, accept the calories and enjoy.

So with Mardi Gras behind us for all practical t-shirt printing purposes, if there’s ever been a holiday that deserves a custom t-shirt, it’s St. Patrick’s Day. This is a day for fun, for wearing green and for pronouncing “I’m Irish,” even if you’re only Irish in spirit. Silliness is allowed and usually encouraged on St. Patrick’s Day, which you’ll know if you’ve ever been to a pub, restaurant or party on this mid-March day. While the Stahl side of the family has German roots, my wife Mary’s side of the family is Irish, and we’ve been to more than one St. Patrick’s Day celebration over the years. Perhaps it’s because folks are looking for excuses to welcome Spring. I know we could all use a little Spring weather now here in Detroit, where it has been below freezing for days on end.  Here’s to looking ahead to the greener pastures of Spring and St. Patrick’s day, and here are some heat printing ideas for you to consider.
