Just when you think you’ve heard every marketing tip in the book, you run across one so stupidly simple you have to wonder why more businesses don’t use it. As someone who travels often for business, I require that my shirts are dry-cleaned and then folded, suitcase ready. It seems that Mary and I are always in search of that one dry cleaner in town that not only cleans and folds the shirts to our satisfaction, but that has quick turnaround and great service. When we discovered Comet Dry Cleaners on Marion Avenue in Punta Gorda, Florida, we found a dry cleaner that not only offers a perfectly finished shirt, but who does one small thing that really sets the business apart–they send us an email when the shirts are finished. If you use a dry cleaner, you know the normal drill–they tell you to come back after 4pm or any given time on a given day. But at Comet Cleaners, we receive an email alerting us to the fact that our shirts are done, and they are usually done a lot faster than originally promised. Now while this might also be true at other dry cleaners, Comet Cleaners is the first to ever send me an email. We found this “stupidly simple” idea simply fantastic. And when you get the email, there’s no more searching for pick up slips or even wondering which dry cleaner you might have used and where it’s located. Anyone out there that offers services which require the customer to return to the store to pick up an item could easily employ this method. Plus, it’s a great way to build up your email database. Of course don’t forget to tell the customer that you might use their email address to send them specials or coupons and always offer the customer an opt-in or opt-out option. It’s the law in most places and just considerate. As I always say, the easier you make it for your customer to do business with you, the better.
