The Great NBA Debate Over Sponsor Names

Photo from investing.businessweek.com. What do you think? Should the NBA allow sponsors to purchase space on player jerseys?

There was a story about it in the Detroit Free Press on March 30 and also mentioned online in Bloomberg Business Week. In April the NBA will vote on whether or not to allow sponsors names to be featured on players’ jerseys.  According to another online article:

A study released last year by Horizon Media calculated that a brand logo across  the middle of an NBA team’s jersey occupying 3.5 percent of the TV screen would  produce $31.18 million in exposure value.

That’s quite a bit of monetizing that would be going on. What I’m wondering is, why haven’t they done this already? Teams in Europe have been doing this for years with huge success. (Soccer teams like Manchester United rake in about $30 million a year in jersey sponsorship ads) And what about NASCAR?  They certainly know how to monetize space on cars, caps, helmets, coveralls, etc…

If it’s a question of how to print those colorful sponsor logos on those high performance jerseys, may we suggest heat printing? We have been suggesting CAD-PRINTZ as a solution for adding full color sponsor logos on any type of fabric for a long time now. And even if the NBA decides not to allow sponsor logos on jerseys, it’s still an excellent solution for all other types of teams that are looking for ways to raise revenues or funds for equipment and field rentals. What do you think? Should the NBA allow sponsors to purchase advertising space on team jerseys?
